CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Lumberjacks headed south to face the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in an intense conference match up. In a close match that included six lead changes, the Toros snapped Humboldt's winning streak in a 70-73 overtime battle at the Torodome on Thursday. Kenya Edelhart recorded a team-high 17 points on 60% shooting and Emilia Long posted a double-double with 15 points, 10 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.
The Toros quickly got comfortable within the first quarter, gaining a 7-point lead on the Lumberjacks within the first 4 minutes of the game. However, the Jacks soon gained their footing back when the team's point leader Emilia Long opened up the scoring for Cal Poly Humboldt. As the quarter continued, the Jacks defensive work left an opportunity for the Cal Poly Lumberjacks to catch up, scoring 9 points in order to take the lead from their competition. The Toros managed to score one last basket at the end of first quarter sending the teams off with an 11-12 score.
The Jacks came into the second quarter playing well offensively. Having their best 3-point (60%) and field goal (64.29%) percentages of the game. Sara Ahmadpour helped the Jacks come out strong, assisting Jadis Watson's layup that allowed the Jack's to take back the lead, and following with her own three pointer to expand that lead. Humboldt quickly dominated the court, scoring 21 of their 70 points in the second quarter. Gaining an 8-point lead over Dominguez Hills, the Jacks went into halftime with some momentum.
Madison Rubino opened up the scoring in the third quarter, rebounding an offensive shot and finishing a layup. Rubino had a game high of 10 rebounds, creating many more chances like this for the Jacks. The Lumberjacks managed to silence the Toros for most of the third quarter, creating an 11-point difference between them and Dominguez Hills in the seventh minute of the quarter. However, the Toros found the basket enough times to close the gap and ended the third quarter with a score of 43-39.
The fourth quarter started with an intense sequence of back and forth points, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Neither team backed down to the other, leaving everyone on the edge of their seat the rest of the game. Just as the Jacks began to pull away from the Toros, Dominguez Hills slowly caught up to Humboldt. A tussle between teams that ultimately resulted in a foul against the Lumberjacks allowed the Toros to create the chance for a good layup making the score 63-62. With a 1 point deficit, both teams work up plans to come out with the win. Kenya Edelhart, used her swift skills to run the clock and frustrate the other team in order to draw a foul. Edelhart makes both shots, earning the Jacks a 3-point lead. With just 7 seconds left in regulation, Dominguez Hills manages to devise a plan that ties the game.
The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks managed to score 5 points in the overtime period. However, they were outscored by the Dominguez Hills Toros. Having kept the game between a 0 to 2 points difference the entire period, besides the end when the Toros manage to edge the Jacks out and end the game with a score of 70-73.
