Humboldt Comes Up Short in SoCal, Falls to LA in Tight Battle

Los Angeles -- Cal Poly Humboldt wrapped up their road trip at Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon from University Gym. A game that saw nine lead changes and five ties came down to the wire, but the Golden Eagles of LA were victorious in the end and defeated Humboldt with a score of 74-66. Kenya Edelhart (22 points) and Marley Johnson (18 points) combined for 40 of the Jacks' 66 points.

A back and forth first quarter was kept close as the largest lead either team had was no more than four points. After the first 10 minutes of action, LA led Humboldt 19-17. The second quarter was defense heavy, as it was the lowest scoring quarter for both teams. With the score tied at 27 and three minutes left, the Golden Eagles closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to hold a 32-27 advantage over Humboldt.

The Jacks came out hot in the third quarter, shooting 58.33% from the field and 80% from three-point range. However, the third quarter was also LA's best shooting quarter as well (50% FG, 42.86% 3PT). Humboldt cut the LA lead to two points out of the gate, but the Golden Eagles managed to go on a 12-3 run and extend their lead to 11 points (47-36), LA's largest lead of the game. The Lumberjacks found themselves down 54-46 at the end of third quarter.

With less than three minutes to go in the fourth quarter, back-to-back three-pointers from Marley Johnson and Kenya Edelhart surged Humboldt to within two points, 66-64. With one minute to go, a Golden Eagle three-pointer secured the game as the Jacks were forced to foul and LA extended their lead throughout the final seconds, defeating Humboldt with a final score of 74-66.
