Humboldt Continues Hot Home Streak, Takes Down Sonoma

ARCATA, Calif. -- On Thursday evening, Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball kept their perfect home winning streak alive and defended the court against Sonoma State with a final score of 63-51. The 6-0 record at home marks the teams' best start on their own court since the 2014-15 season, who started off their season 12-0 inside Lumberjack Arena. Kacie Slover posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Sara Ahmadpour led the team with 15 points and Emilia Long added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Humboldt currently sits one spot out of the final playoff spot.

"I'm proud of the team for getting the win tonight," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We didn't shoot the ball well, however, I liked our ball movement and our shot selection. Overall, I thought we were solid on the defensive end."

Back to back three-pointers from Sara Ahmadpour and Marley Johnson gave Humboldt a seven point lead half way through the first quarter. An even first period saw a 17-17 start between the teams. The second quarter was a defensive battle as each team only scored once in the final five minutes before the half. Kenya Edelhart's layup at the 2:39 mark gave the Jacks a 29-28 to close out the period.

After going 1-for-16 in three-point attempts in the first half, the Jacks shot 50 percent from three in the third quarter alone. Emilia Long, Marley Johnson, and Sara Ahmadpour hit four straight threes to open the third quarter and jumped ahead 41-35. Kacie Slover converted on a layup with 46 seconds left to extend the Lumberjack lead to nine points, 47-38.

Earlier this season on December 9, Humboldt held an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter at Sonoma State and were outscored 28-7 in the fourth quarter, and fell to the Seawolves in the first matchup. However, that was not the case this time around. Humboldt outscored Sonoma 16-10 in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 17 points after going on a 13-3 run. The Jacks defended their home court and improved to 6-0 at home after defeating Sonoma State 63-51 on Thursday evening.
