ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball team fell to Cal State San Marcos in a four-set battle (23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lumberjacks drop to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play, while the Cougars improve to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
Humboldt showcased strong performances across the board, but the Cougars' efficient attack and key defensive plays made the difference.
Set Recap
The first set was a tight contest throughout, with both teams exchanging leads. Humboldt matched the Cougars with 13 kills, but their 9 attack errors proved costly, allowing San Marcos to edge out a 25-23 victory.
The second set saw the Cougars take control, hitting at an impressive .357 clip while holding the 'Jacks to a .057 attack percentage. The Cougars' defensive pressure and solid net play led to a decisive 25-16 win.
Humboldt responded in the third set, hitting .256 as a team and limiting their errors. Behind strong offensive contributions from
Awelina Fakalata and
Graysen Trupp, the 'Jacks fought their way to a 25-21 set victory, extending the match to a fourth set.
The fourth set was another hard-fought battle. Despite Humboldt's effort to close the gap late, Cal State San Marcos sealed the match with a 25-22 win.
Game Leaders
For Humboldt,
Awelina Fakalata led the team with 18 kills while adding 13 digs for a double-double performance.
Graysen Trupp contributed 13 kills, and
Hollis Downing added 7 kills along with 4 blocks.
Kyra Slavik dished out 34 assists and added 3 blocks, while
Sophia Spoja anchored the defense with a team-high 20 digs.
Mackenzie Gilchrist also contributed 12 digs, which is her fourth time this season reaching double-digits for digs.
Cal State San Marcos was led by Danielle McCasland's 16 kills, while Addison Kranz (13 kills) and Jessica Thomas (12 kills) also played pivotal roles in the Cougars' offensive attack. Gracie Zaitz facilitated the offense with 47 assists and contributed 15 digs, while Jackie Phillips led all players with 28 digs.
