CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks concluded their 2024 volleyball season with a tough 3-0 loss against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Saturday evening in the Torodome. Despite a determined effort, the Lumberjacks fell in straight sets by scores of 19-25, 18-25, and 21-25.
With the loss, Cal Poly Humboldt finishes the season at 8-18 overall and 4-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), matching the Toros' conference record (7-19 overall).
Match Highlights
The Lumberjacks started strong in the first set, hitting .136 with 11 kills, including a team-high nine kills by senior
Awelina Fakalata. However, the Toros' more efficient .239 attack percentage in the opening frame allowed them to take the set 25-19.
Cal Poly Humboldt struggled offensively in the second set, hitting -.056 with just five kills, as Cal State Dominguez Hills capitalized with a 15-kill performance to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The third set saw a spirited response from the 'Jacks. Contributions from
Graysen Trupp and
Kyra Slavik, who each tallied four kills, and strong defensive play by
Hollis Downing (9 total blocks) kept the set competitive. Despite their best efforts, the Lumberjacks could not contain CSUDH's standout Ava Hurry, who finished the match with 19 kills and a .324 hitting percentage, helping the Toros secure the final set 25-21.
