POMONA, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt (7-15, 3-11 CCAA) faced an uphill battle Saturday afternoon as they took on No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona (20-1, 14-0 CCAA) at Kellogg Arena. The Lumberjacks put up a competitive showing, especially in the second set, but ultimately fell to the first place Broncos in straight sets (13-25, 19-25, 18-25).
Awelina Fakalata led the Lumberjack offense with 13 kills, while
Madyn Cervellera contributed seven, and
Kyra Slavik added six. Humboldt showcased their defensive efforts, with Slavik leading the team in digs (10), supported by
Sophia Spoja and Fakalata, who each chipped in with nine.
Humboldt's serving and blocking efforts were highlighted by aces from Slavik and
Shanaley Iakopo, while
Aurora Meneghetti registered two blocks alongside
Graysen Trupp and
Hollis Downing, who each added one.
The Lumberjacks' offensive efficiency improved notably in the second set, hitting .243 as a team, their highest percentage of the match. Fakalata's showing, coupled with setter
Brielle Wilson's 19 assists, helped Humboldt stay competitive. However, Pomona's powerful offense and consistent blocking kept the momentum on their side.
Pomona's Samantha Campion led all players with 11 kills and six aces, proving instrumental in the Broncos' victory. Setter Caitie Mueller also provided a game-high 33 assists, orchestrating a well-rounded offense that hit .290 overall.
Looking Ahead
Cal Poly Humboldt will return to Lumberjack Arena for the final home games of the season next week. On Thursday (Nov. 7), the 'Jacks will host Stanislaus State (15-7, 8-6 CCAA) at 7:00 PM for Staff & Faculty Appreciation Night and then on Saturday (Nov. 9), Humboldt will celebrate the final home match of the season with Senior Night against Chico State (8-12, 5-8 CCAA) at 3:00 PM.
