Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Drew Gwerder

Humboldt Falls to San Bernardino in Hard-Fought Match

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team dropped a tightly contested 1-0 match to Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) on Sunday at Premier Field. In a game defined by resilient defensive efforts on both sides, a late penalty kick proved to be the deciding factor.

The first half saw a balanced battle, with each team creating scoring chances but unable to break through. CSUSB (5-5-6, 3-4-3 CCAA) outshot Humboldt 6-4 in the opening half, but strong goalkeeping and defensive organization kept the match scoreless. Lumberjack goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo delivered a standout performance, tallying eight saves across the match and keeping Humboldt (3-10-4, 2-7-2 CCAA) within striking distance.

The pivotal moment came in the 76th minute when a penalty kick was awarded to CSUSB following a contested call in the box. Despite some debate over the ruling, CSUSB's Brian Castillo capitalized, converting the penalty kick to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. Cal Poly Humboldt remained composed, pressing for an equalizer but was unable to overcome the deficit.

Humboldt's defensive resilience was on full display as they limited CSUSB's attack to nine shots on goal, with Gallardo denying several high-quality chances. Offensively, Humboldt managed seven shots, three of which were on target, but CSUSB's defense held firm.

Maumausolo Uiagalelei received a yellow card shortly after the penalty kick in the 76th minute, while CSUSB's Michael Maldonado was booked in the 83rd minute as the intensity escalated late in the game.

The Lumberjacks will look to regroup as they return home for their season finale next Thursday against Sonoma State, seeking to close out the season on a high note.
