Extra Inning Victory Highlights Saturday Split in Seaside

SEASIDE, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt Softball sees a Saturday split with Cal State Monterey Bay after a gritty extra-inning victory in game two. In the final inning, Vanessa Saltos was the difference maker, hitting an RBI double and scoring. Vanessa Richie pitched a gem over eight innings of play to come away with the win.

Game One (L, 2-3)
Cal State Monterey Bay scored two early runs, one run in each of the first two innings. After Hailey Meisenbach reached on an error, Hailee Moore singled down the left field line to put 'Jacks on the corners. Moore went on to steal second base and put two runners in scoring position. Two batters later, Katlyn Gifford singled up the middle to even the game 2-2. The Otters scratched one across in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly and held on for the 3-2 win.

Notable Stats
- Hailee Moore: 2-for-3, BB, R, SB
- Izzy Starr: 2-for-4
- Katlyn Gifford: 1-for-4, 2 RBI
- Alyssa Smokey recorded the loss (3-2)
- Mackenzie Willis of CSUMB recorded the win (3-3)
- Kelsey Alcantara of CSUMB notched her second save of the season

Game Two (W, 5-3, 8 Innings)
Vanessa Richie didn't allow an Otter hit until the bottom of the third inning as she was in a groove from the circle. The 'Jacks plated a run in the top half of the third on an Alyssa Smokey single up the middle that knocked in Hailee Moore. In the fifth, Humboldt struck again in similar fashion, this time with a Smokey fielder's choice that knocked in Moore to make it 2-0. The Otters found the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when a double to left center knocked in a run to make it a 2-1 game. A pair of singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Humboldt in the seventh inning.

The 'Jacks gave themselves some breathing room when Moore scored for the third time on a wild pitch. In their final at-bats, the Otters managed to tie the game 3-3 and force extra innings on a pich-hit two-run homer from Abby Alcayaga. A lead off walk from Shelby Shanks gave the 'Jacks a spark as the next batter, Vanessa Saltos, doubled to deep left-center field that knocked in Shanks. After advancing to third base on the throw, Saltos scored on the next play thanks to a Hailey Meisenbach sacrifice fly to center field. Vanessa Richie closed the door in her next opportunity and didn't allow a single Otter to reach base in the bottom of the eighth inning, securing a 5-3 victory for Humboldt.
