ATHERTON, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt (0-2-2) battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Fresno Pacific (0-1-3) in a match at Menlo College on Saturday afternoon. The non-conference clash featured intense play, a penalty kick goal, and a late equalizer, with neither side able to find the winner in extra time.
Fresno Pacific struck first in the 51st minute when Chris Macias converted a penalty kick, putting the Sunbirds up 1-0. The Jacks responded with persistence, pushing for an equalizer as they tallied 10 shots in the second half alone.
The breakthrough for Cal Poly Humboldt came in the 79th minute.
Alex Lopez netted his first goal of the season, assisted by
Cooper Stephens, to level the score at 1-1. Lopez's goal came after sneaky tap from Stephens on a free kick opportunity.
Both teams had chances throughout the match, with the Jacks outshooting the Sunbirds 16-14, including 8 shots on goal to Fresno Pacific's 6. In goal, Humboldt's defense was bolstered by five saves from
Adrian Gallardo, keeping the match within reach after the early penalty goal.
The match saw several heated moments as both teams pushed for the win. Fresno Pacific's Stephan Morris received a yellow card in the 88th minute, while Humboldt's
James Haynes was cautioned just moments later.
Cal Poly Humboldt will look to build on this performance as they continue their non-conference slate, seeking their first win of the season.
The Jacks return to action next Thursday, September 19, at Jessup University in Rocklin, CA. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM from Warrior Field.
