ARCATA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Humboldt secured a significant road victory, defeating second-place Stanislaus State 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 13-25, 25-21) in a pivotal CCAA matchup. The win not only marks the Lumberjacks' third straight triumph over Stanislaus State but also matches their total number of wins from the 2023 season with six, showcasing the program's steady improvement.
The Jacks were fueled by standout offensive performances from
Awelina Fakalata and
Madyn Cervellera, who combined for 41 kills. Fakalata led all players with 23 kills (.356), adding 16 digs, 4 aces, and 3 blocks in a dominant all-around performance. Cervellera followed closely with 18 kills (.396), helping Humboldt claim their second conference win of the season.
Humboldt came out strong in the opening set, cruising to a 25-15 win while limiting Stanislaus State to a .094 hitting percentage. The second set was a battle, but the Lumberjacks edged the Warriors 25-23 behind a .375 hitting percentage. After dropping the third set, 25-13, Humboldt bounced back with a powerful fourth set performance, closing out the match 25-21 with 20 team kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
"We had a good battle tonight with Stanislaus," said head coach
Angela Spoja. "We have been working on our unforced errors and we were so much better tonight. We had Awelina with 23 kills and 16 digs, and Madyn with 18 kills and 9 digs. Kyra doing a great job offensively with 46 assists in 4 sets and 10 digs. Sophia had 12 digs and 3 aces, while Aurora had no errors on 11 attempts and an ace at a crucial time. Overall, I'm very proud of our grit tonight and all around effort."

Stanislaus State was led by Isabella Saucedo and Malia Tanksley with 12 kills apiece, while Gabby Rawson added a match-high 22 digs to anchor the Warriors' defense.
With the victory, Humboldt improves to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play, tying their win total from the entire 2023 season. The Lumberjacks will look to continue their momentum when they return home for their next matchup against first place Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, October 3.
