'Jacks Sink Sharks for Back-to-Back Wins

Hilo, HI – The Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks (2-1, 0-0 CCAA) secured their second win of the season by defeating the Hawaii Pacific Sharks (0-5, 0-0 PacWest) in a four-set battle at Vulcan Gym on Friday night. After dropping the first set 19-25, the Lumberjacks rallied to win three straight sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-14) and clinch the victory in front of nearly 100 spectators.

Match Recap

The Sharks came out strong in the first set, capitalizing on early errors by Cal Poly Humboldt to take a 25-19 win. However, the Lumberjacks quickly found their rhythm in the second set, improving their hitting percentage to .222 and holding Hawaii Pacific to a .071 percentage to win 25-15. The third set saw an even more dominant performance from the 'Jacks, with a .368 hitting percentage that powered them to a 25-18 win. Cal Poly Humboldt sealed the match with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set, bolstered by strong defensive efforts and key blocks.

Team Leaders

Cal Poly Humboldt was led by Awelina Fakalata, who recorded a game-high 20 kills and added 18 digs, tallying her second double-double of the season. Madyn Cervellera contributed 14 kills, while Graysen Trupp added 12 kills and 3 service aces. Also recording 3 service aces was Mackenzie Gilchrist. Setter Kyra Slavik orchestrated the offense with 42 assists and chipped in with 9 digs. On the defensive side, Allaina Houk led with 3 blocks. Sophia Spoja had an outstanding performance defensively with 17 digs.

For Hawaii Pacific, Lindsey Tapp had a team-high 7 kills, 4 aces, and 12 digs. Tehani Pescaia dished out 19 assists, while Brynne Hopeau-Lampitoc contributed 12 digs and 1 ace. Ali Rumpel and Sophia Cooper each had 3 blocks to anchor the defense.

Team Comparison

Cal Poly Humboldt outperformed Hawaii Pacific in several statistical categories, leading in kills (56-32), aces (10-5), and digs (60-40). The Lumberjacks also had a higher hitting percentage (.248) compared to the Sharks (.150) and held a 4-6 edge in blocks.
