ARCATA, Calif. -- In the Humboldt Kickoff Classic finale at College Creek Field, the Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team fell to Dominican University of California by a score of 2-0. The loss drops Humboldt to 0-1-1 on the season, while Dominican improves to 2-0-0.
The game remained scoreless through the first half, with both teams creating opportunities but unable to capitalize. Dominican came out strong in the second half, breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute when Chris Mendez-Lemus scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Cole Porter. The visiting Penguins extended their lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute with a goal from Lex Bernier, his second of the season, set up by Diego Grande.
Cal Poly Humboldt applied pressure throughout the match, registering 14 shots, including 7 on goal. Despite the offensive efforts, Dominican goalkeeper turned away all attempts, making seven crucial saves. Humboldt's defense, anchored by goalkeeper
Adrian Gallardo, who recorded an impressive 10 saves, worked hard to fend off Dominican's attack but conceded two goals from 18 total shots, 12 of which were on target.
Looking Ahead
Cal Poly Humboldt will hit the road next week for a pair of road matches in the Bay Area. On Thursday, the 'Jacks will take on Menlo College at 4 PM and on Saturday they will face off against Fresno Pacific at 1 PM. Both matches will take place at Cartan Field in Atherton.
