Turnovers Plague Jacks in Loss to San Marcos, Lovett Notches New Career-High

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Despite a strong first and fourth-quarter effort, the Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team could not overcome a rash of turnovers, falling 70-60 to Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center. The loss dropped the Jacks to 5-11 overall and 4-6 in CCAA play, while the Cougars picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-14 overall and 1-8 in conference.

Turnovers were the story of the game, as Humboldt committed 23 to San Marcos' 18. The Cougars capitalized with 19 points off turnovers, compared to 12 for the Jacks.

Key Performers

  • Dylan Lovett led the Jacks with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added three rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes.
  • Riley Sanz contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
  • Kyori Lloyd rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points, including a perfect 3-for-5 performance from the free-throw line.

San Marcos was paced by Rory Hetrick, who matched Lovett's 19 points while also collecting six rebounds and three steals. Rose Morse added 14 points and knocked down three triples, while Camille Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 13 points and five rebounds.

Game Summary

The Jacks started strong, shooting 53.3% from the field in the first quarter, but trailed 23-20 after 10 minutes. A second-quarter scoring drought allowed the Cougars to extend their lead, as Humboldt shot just 33.3% and committed six turnovers.

San Marcos took control in the third quarter, outscoring Humboldt 17-6 behind sharp shooting and a dominant defensive effort. The Jacks mounted a late rally in the fourth, scoring 24 points and hitting 10 free throws, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

  • Humboldt shot 45.7% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 6-of-21 (28.6%).
  • San Marcos shot an efficient 50.0% overall and connected on 40.9% of their three-point attempts.

The Jacks return to Arcata to host a two-game homestand, beginning Thursday, January 23, against Cal State Los Angeles (11-4, 6-4 CCAA). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM at Lumberjack Arena.
