ARCATA, Calif. – A valiant fourth-quarter effort by the Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team fell just short on Thursday night, as the Lumberjacks dropped a tight 55-52 contest to Cal State LA in front of 212 fans at Lumberjack Arena.
Trailing by 10 points heading into the final frame, Humboldt (5-12, 4-7 CCAA) staged an 18-point fourth quarter, fueled by sharp shooting and a relentless defensive effort. However, the Golden Eagles (12-4, 7-4 CCAA) held on with critical free throws and defensive stops to secure the victory.
First Half Battle
Humboldt started strong in the opening quarter, with Riley Sanz pacing the offense early. Sanz finished with a team-high 13 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor and adding eight rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Jacks trailed 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lumberjacks found their rhythm in the second period, shooting 37.5% from the field and outscoring Cal State LA 15-10. Strong play from Kyori Lloyd, who totaled nine points and seven rebounds on the night, gave Humboldt a 25-22 halftime advantage.
Golden Eagles Surge in the Third Quarter
Cal State LA responded with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Humboldt 25-9 to reclaim momentum. Lily Buggs led the Golden Eagles with 15 points and six rebounds, while Amaya Fuentes chipped in 14 points, including two three-pointers. Olivia Hodges was a force on the boards, pulling down 19 rebounds and adding 10 points.
Fourth Quarter Rally
The Lumberjacks refused to go quietly, storming back in the final period. Humboldt shot 53.3% in the quarter, with Dylan Lovett and Sanz leading the charge. Lovett finished with nine points, while Dailani Richardson added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. Marley Johnson provided a spark, hitting two key three-pointers to cut into the deficit.
