SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team showcased a well-rounded performance on Saturday, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 81-70 in a decisive bounce-back victory at the Otter Sports Center. The win improves the Lumberjacks to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play, while the Otters fall to 3-8 and 0-6 in the conference.
"I thought our guys showed great togetherness and determination today," stated head coach Chirs Tifft postgame. "We had a disappointing second half on Thursday night, but found a way to have a great practice on Friday and get ourselves focused on today's opponent. It's always a great feeling to get a conference road win. We look forward to building on this win as we prepare for two challenging games at home."
Five Lumberjacks reached double figures, leading a balanced offensive attack. Josiah Sanders topped the team with 16 points, adding six rebounds, while Aidan Fowler and Jamal Briscoe chipped in 14 points apiece. Kalib LaCount (13 points, five rebounds) and Rob Diaz III (10 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Humboldt.
The Lumberjacks' fast-paced transition game proved pivotal, outscoring Monterey Bay 20-0 in fast-break points. Additionally, their sharp ball control shined, committing just six turnovers compared to 15 by the Otters.
Trailing 40-34 at halftime, Humboldt ignited in the second half, outscoring the Otters 47-30. The Jacks shot an efficient 48.1% from the field and drained three critical three-pointers after being held without a make from deep in the first half. Their defensive adjustments held Monterey Bay to just 34.5% shooting in the second period.
Humboldt was aggressive in attacking the rim, which resulted in an effective 24-for-29 (82.8%) performance from the free-throw line that helped the Lumberjacks secure their sixth win of the season. Today's sixth win matches last seasons' win total. Humboldt also saw strong contributions off the bench, including Fowler's impactful 14-point effort.
Monterey Bay was led by Blake Jones, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Joey Bilello and Michael Mora each contributed 13 points.
