Balanced Effort Falls Short in Season Home Opener Against Northwest Nazarene

ARCATA, Calif. — Despite three Lumberjacks scoring 18 points apiece and strong performances on the glass from Satica Shade and Jordyn Smith, Cal Poly Humboldt dropped its season home opener 82–75 to Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night inside Lumberjack Arena.

Shade and Smith both recorded double-doubles to lead Humboldt's effort. Shade finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while Smith went 8-for-13 from the floor, adding 18 points and 10 boards. Joining them with 18 points was junior guard Kyori Lloyd, who connected on two three-pointers and added seven rebounds.

The Lumberjacks came out strong in front of the home crowd, taking a 21–15 lead after the opening quarter and matching the Nighthawks point-for-point in the second to hold a six-point edge at halftime. However, the third quarter proved pivotal, as Humboldt was limited to just eight points while Northwest Nazarene regained momentum and control of the game.

Despite the tough third frame, the Jacks showed fight in the fourth quarter—matching NNU with 25 points behind timely three-point shooting and aggressive rebounding—but the comeback bid fell short in the final minutes.

As a team, Humboldt shot 43.8 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc, while outrebounding the Nighthawks 40–35. The Jacks tallied 32 points in the paint and forced 17 NNU turnovers, converting them into 24 points on the other end.

Cal Poly Humboldt (0-1, 0-0 CCAA) returns to action on Saturday evening, when they host Central Washington (1-0, 0-0 GNAC) inside Lumberjack Arena at 7:30 PM.
