CHICO, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt closed out its 2025 season with a hard-fought 1-0 setback against Chico State on Thursday morning at University Soccer Stadium. Despite a strong second-half push and multiple scoring chances, including a near equalizer off the crossbar in the final minutes, the Jacks came up just short.
The Wildcats capitalized early, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute when Dane Peterson scored his sixth goal of the season off an assist from Matthew Rajecki. From there, the match tightened, with Humboldt controlling much of the possession and generating consistent pressure throughout the second half.
The Jacks outshot Chico State 17-7 overall, including a 9-3 advantage after halftime. Their best opportunity came in the closing moments when forward Cooper Stephens unleashed a strike from the top of the box that ricocheted off the crossbar, narrowly missing the equalizer.
Second half Humboldt goalkeeper, Benjamin McDonald recorded three saves in the match, while the Wildcats' goalkeeper matched that total to preserve the shutout.
The physical contest saw three yellow cards issued—two to the Jacks and one to Chico State—as both sides battled for every possession.
"I'm proud of how our team grew throughout the season," said head coach Fred Jungemann. "We got better as the year went on and had some positive developments that we'll carry into next year. There were moments that showcased the effort and dedication these players put in every day, and today was another example as we battled Chico for 90 minutes and had our opportunities. I also want to thank our fans for their support throughout the season and extend our appreciation to DANCO for sponsoring free admission for our home matches this year."
With the result, Cal Poly Humboldt concludes the 2025 campaign at 2-12-3 overall and 0-8-2 in CCAA play, while Chico State improves to 5-7-4 and 3-4-3 in conference action.
Despite the final score, the Jacks showcased resilience and growth throughout the season, continuing to compete with intensity and pride in their final outing. Humboldt will now turn to offseason recruiting, development, and growth and prepare for a spring season of scrimmages and the Fall 2026 season.
