Cardiac Jacks Prevail in Thriller Over Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES – In a game featuring 14 lead changes and five ties, Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball lived up to their 'Cardiac Jacks' reputation, pulling away late to secure a crucial 77-72 victory over Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon inside University Gym. The win puts Humboldt (15-10, 11-9 CCAA) in prime position to clinch a postseason tournament berth after the completion of all CCAA games on Saturday evening, as they are still tied for fourth place in the standings.

The Jacks had five players score in double figures, with Kyle Frelow leading the way with his seventh double-double of the season, posting 14 points and 12 rebounds while shooting an efficient 5-for-6 from the field. Aidan Fowler matched Frelow's 14 points, hitting four three-pointers. Kalib LaCount (13 points), Rob Diaz (13 points), and Marsai Mason (14 points) all played key roles in the balanced offensive attack.

Defensively, Diaz made his presence felt with three steals and three blocks, disrupting Cal State LA's offense throughout the contest. Humboldt dominated the rebounding battle, securing a 45-32 edge on the boards, including 23 offensive rebounds that led to 24 second-chance points.

The game remained tight in the first half, with Humboldt holding a slim 38-36 lead at the break. The second half saw both teams continue to trade baskets, but the Jacks took control in the final minutes. Timely three-point shooting and clutch free throws helped Humboldt seal the win down the stretch.

Cal State LA (11-15, 9-11 CCAA) was led by Corey Cofield II, who scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Kyjuan Cannady added 17 points off the bench, while Dominic Escobar chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

With the victory, Humboldt now turns its focus to pivotal home matchups next week as seeding for the postseason is still a factor. Thursday's tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena against Cal State San Marcos (6-20, 6-14 CCAA). On Saturday, the Jacks will celebrate Senior Night and also have FREE admission for the final home game for fan appreciation. Humboldt will host Sonoma State, who will play their final game of the season, and potentially program history, following the announcement that SSU will be discontinuing their athletic programs after this season.
