Heartbreaker at the Buzzer: San Marcos Edges Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt battled until the final moments, but a last-second putback with 0.5 seconds remaining gave Cal State San Marcos a 57-55 victory on Thursday evening at Lumberjack Arena.

The game saw seven lead changes and three ties as the Lumberjacks fought to the very end. Kyori Lloyd led the way for Humboldt with 17 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting, while Kaiija Lesane added 16 points and five rebounds. Marley Johnson also finished in double figures with 11 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Andjela Pavicevic anchored the defense, recording a career-high five blocks to go along with seven rebounds.

Cal Poly Humboldt (9-18, 8-13 CCAA) started strong, outscoring San Marcos 19-15 in the first quarter behind a sharp 53.8% shooting effort. Both teams played a near even second quarter, leading to a 33-29 Humboldt advantage at the half.

In the third quarter, San Marcos (8-19, 8-13 CCAA) caught fire, shooting 61.5% from the field and 62.5% from three-point range to take a 51-49 lead heading into the final frame. Both teams locked in defensively in the fourth, with each scoring just six points. The Lumberjacks had a chance to close it out and complete the comeback, but a last-second offensive rebound and putback from the Cougars sealed the heartbreaking loss for Humboldt.

The Lumberjacks won the turnover battle, forcing 21 San Marcos turnovers while committing just 17. However, San Marcos capitalized on three-point shooting, knocking down 10-of-26 from deep compared to Humboldt's 5-of-22.
