HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Cal Poly Humboldt softball (2-0) kicked off the 2025 season in dominant fashion, sweeping its opening day matchups for the first time since 2019. The Lumberjacks started with a commanding 10-0 run-rule shutout over No. 22 Lewis, their first season-opening win since 2019 and first run-rule victory in a season opener since 2017. They followed up with a decisive 6-1 win over Ferris State, capping off a statement day at Sand Island Park in Hawai'i.

Cal Poly Humboldt softball (1-0) opened the 2025 season in dominant fashion, shutting out No. 22 Lewis (2-2) in a commanding 10-0 run-rule victory at Sand Island Park on Tuesday afternoon. This marks Humboldt's first season-opening win since 2019 and the program's first run-rule victory in a season opener since 2017.
The Jacks wasted no time getting on the board, as Alyssa Smokey's RBI double in the first inning brought Hailee Moore home for the early 1-0 lead. Humboldt added two more in the third, capitalizing on a Shelby Shanks RBI single and a wild pitch that allowed Smokey to score.
Humboldt then exploded for a seven-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach. The scoring barrage started with a bases-loaded walk from Bridgette Boling, followed by an RBI hit-by-pitch taken by Smokey. Lauren Asia drove in two more with a single to left center, and Vanessa Saltos ripped a two-run double to make it 9-0. Alyssa Ramirez capped the inning with an RBI triple down the left-field line, extending the lead to double digits.
On the mound, Gaige Garcia (1-0) delivered an impressive season debut, tossing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. Riley Shopp took over in the fourth and closed the game with two scoreless innings, limiting Lewis to just two total hits on the day.
Humboldt's offense finished with seven hits, including extra-base contributions from Smokey, Saltos, and Ramirez. The Jacks also showcased their speed with stolen bases from Bella Garcia, Moore, and Hailey Meisenbach.

Cal Poly Humboldt Softball (2-0) made an emphatic statement to open the 2025 season, securing a 6-1 victory over Ferris State (1-3) at Sand Island Park on Tuesday afternoon. The win marked the first time since 2019 that the Lumberjacks have swept their opening day games.
Alyssa Smokey (1-0) was dominant in the circle, allowing just one hit over six shutout innings while striking out four. She was backed by a productive Humboldt offense that racked up 10 hits, including a key two-run double by Vanessa Saltos in the third inning.
How It Happened
Humboldt wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bella Garcia scored on a wild pitch. The Lumberjacks extended their lead in the third, as Saltos' double drove in two runs before Alyssa Ramirez added an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Jacks continued to apply pressure in the sixth, when Garcia's RBI single and Hailee Moore's RBI base hit pushed the lead to 6-0. Ferris State managed to scratch across a run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome Humboldt's strong performance.

The victory capped off a perfect start to the season for the Lumberjacks, who earlier in the day secured a win in their season opener. This marks the first time since 2019 that Cal Poly Humboldt has won both of its opening day games, setting the stage for a strong season ahead.
Humboldt will continue play in Hawai'i with a doubleheader matchup against Hawai'i Pacific University on Thursday, Feb. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM (1:00 PM HT).
