Defensive Miscues Cost Humboldt in Game Two, Shanks Rides Seven-Game Hit Streak
A rough game two in the field proved costly for Cal Poly Humboldt softball as errors plagued the Lumberjacks in a 13-1 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay in the series finale at Humboldt Softball Field. Despite solid offensive performances from Hailee Moore and Shelby Shanks, Humboldt (15-8, 4-4 CCAA) was unable to overcome the Otters' (12-8, 5-5 CCAA) early offensive explosion.
The Otters jumped out to a commanding lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of errors and key hits, including a two-run double by Nevaeh Martinez. A grand slam by Ally Alcayaga in the third inning pushed the game further out of reach as the Jacks struggled to contain Monterey Bay's offense.
Humboldt's lone run came in the bottom of the third when Vanessa Saltos drove in Shanks on a fielder's choice. However, that was all the offense the Jacks could muster against Otters' starter Savannah Madrigal (7-1), who allowed just one run over 3.1 innings of work.
Moore and Shanks led the way offensively for the Jacks, combining for three of the team's seven hits. Moore went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Shanks, who extended her hitting streak to seven games, reached base three times, recording a hit and drawing two walks.
Defensively, the Jacks committed four errors, which led to multiple unearned runs for the Otters. Riley Shopp (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) in just a third of an inning.
