Humboldt Handles Business in OT, Clips Toros for Second Straight Win

ARCATA, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball delivered an overtime thriller Thursday night, edging Cal State Dominguez Hills 97-91 in front of an energized home crowd at Lumberjack Arena to secure its second straight victory.

The Lumberjacks (5-6, 3-2 CCAA) showcased one of their most complete offensive performances of the season, placing six players in double figures while shooting an efficient 53.2 percent from the field and a scorching 48.1 percent from three-point range. Humboldt also proved poised in the extra period, going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line to close out the win.

Wayne Hampton III led the way with a team-high 22 points, adding five assists and knocking down all 10 of his free throw attempts, including key makes in overtime. Drew Ardouin provided a spark off the bench, pouring in 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting while hitting four triples.

Zaveion Bineyard continued his strong play inside, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds, while Dorrell Thomas connected on four three-pointers en route to 14 points. Shakir Odunewu added 10 points and five rebounds in the post, and Rob Jenkins rounded out the balanced effort with 10 points and a team-high seven assists.

The game lived up to its billing as a back-and-forth battle, featuring 15 ties and 17 lead changes. Humboldt held a narrow 53-45 advantage at halftime before the Toros battled back in the second half to force overtime. From there, the Lumberjacks took control at the foul line and on the defensive end, holding Cal State Dominguez Hills to just six points in the extra session.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-4, 3-2 CCAA) was led by Jalen Brown's 23 points and DaSean Stevens' 17, but the Toros were limited to 30 percent shooting in overtime.

Cal Poly Humboldt will look to keep the momentum rolling on Sunday, returning to Lumberjack Arena to face Cal State Los Angeles (3-8, 2-3 CCAA) at 3:00 p.m. as the Lumberjacks aim to extend their winning streak in CCAA play. It is Youth Day for all local kids and campers, with postgame autographs and photo opportunities for those in attendance.
