ARCATA, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball delivered one of its most thrilling performances of the season Thursday night, erasing a 22-point deficit to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 85-81 in an overtime Cal Poly Clash showdown at Lumberjack Arena.
The victory marked Humboldt's third straight win, seventh in its last eight games, and kept the Lumberjacks firmly in second place in the CCAA at 8-3 (10-7 overall). The Jacks also remained perfect in overtime games this season (3-0), showcasing their poise in crunch time in front of 500-plus fans.
Humboldt trailed 45-35 at halftime and found itself down by as many as 22 points in the first half before beginning a steady climb back into the contest. A relentless defensive effort and timely shooting sparked the comeback, led by Rob Jenkins and Drew Ardouin, who played pivotal roles in shifting momentum.
Jenkins turned in a standout performance with a game-high 23 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and adding four steals. Ardouin came off the bench and delivered a massive spark, knocking down five three-pointers on his way to 19 points, igniting the Lumberjack rally in the second half.
The comeback effort was complemented by strong all-around contributions throughout the lineup. Zaveion Bineyard recorded his third double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Shakir Odunewu controlled the paint with 12 points and eight boards. Brandon Bento-Jackson stretched the floor with three made triples, and Wayne Hampton III directed the offense with nine assists, keeping the Jacks composed during their push.
After the teams traded baskets late in regulation, Humboldt carried its momentum into overtime. In the final minute, senior forward Dennis Cash was called upon and delivered in the biggest moment of the night. Cash grabbed two critical rebounds and capped the comeback by scoring the putback game-winner in the final seconds, sealing the 85-81 victory for the Lumberjacks.
Cal Poly Humboldt outscored Pomona 12-8 in overtime and dominated the second half, holding the Broncos to just 28 points after allowing 45 in the opening frame.
The 'Jacks now return to Lumberjack Arena on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for the final game of the homestand against Cal State San Bernardino (9-9, 6-5 CCAA). Saturday's contest is a White-Out Game, and fans are encouraged to wear white. Students who arrive early to the student section will receive free white shirts while supplies last.
