Balanced Effort Lifts Cal Poly Humboldt Past CSUSB, 81-67

ARCATA, Calif. — Behind a balanced scoring attack and relentless defensive energy, Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball pulled away in the second half to defeat Cal State San Bernardino, 81-67, in CCAA action Saturday afternoon at Lumberjack Arena.

The Lumberjacks (12-6, 10-2 CCAA) placed five players in double figures and controlled the glass, using grit, physicality, and composure at the free-throw line to earn their 10th conference win of the season.

Kyori Lloyd, Sienna Cherwinski, and Riley Sanz each finished with a team-high 17 points to pace Humboldt. Lloyd added eight rebounds and consistently attacked the paint, while Cherwinski delivered one of her most efficient outings of the season, knocking down 4-of-6 shots from the floor, including three triples, and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

Sanz was relentless throughout, drawing contact and converting 12-of-14 free throws to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Her toughness at both ends helped Humboldt maintain control whenever CSUSB attempted to make a run.

Shade Satica provided a spark on both sides of the ball, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, and a team-high four steals. Kya Kanoho added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench, while Jordyn Smith anchored the interior with eight rebounds, two blocks, and several key defensive possessions that did not show up fully in the box score.

After taking a 41-30 lead into halftime, the Lumberjacks stretched the margin to as many as 20 points in the third quarter behind strong shooting and second-chance opportunities. Humboldt finished with a 38-31 rebounding advantage and outscored the Coyotes 19-10 in second-chance points.

Cal Poly Humboldt shot 40.4 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range, while converting 26 free throws on the afternoon. The Lumberjacks also forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 17 points.

CSUSB (7-10, 5-7 CCAA) was led by Jaushlynn Ruffin's 14 points, but Humboldt's depth and defensive pressure proved too much down the stretch.

The Lumberjacks will look to continue their strong CCAA play as they hit the road for four road games beginning next Thursday at Cal State Los Angeles.
