Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Drew Gwerder

Hot Start by Golden Eagles Hands Humboldt Road Loss at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball saw its two-game winning streak snapped Thursday night, falling 74-47 at Cal State LA inside University Gym.

Despite the setback, the Lumberjacks remain firmly in the CCAA title picture at 10-3 in conference play. Humboldt is now tied for third in the standings, holding a three-game cushion over the teams chasing behind, sitting one game back of second-place Chico State (11-2) and two games behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona (12-1) — a team Humboldt defeated earlier this season.

Cal State LA (13-5, 10-3 CCAA) set the tone early, knocking down six three-pointers in the opening quarter to build a 26-8 lead. Humboldt battled throughout the night but struggled to find consistent rhythm offensively, while 19 turnovers led to 20 Golden Eagle points on the other end.

Sienna Cherwinski led the Lumberjacks with 12 points, adding a pair of three-pointers, while Jordyn Smith contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kyori Lloyd was efficient in her minutes, scoring seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field.

Humboldt showed flashes late, outscoring Cal State LA 17-12 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. The Lumberjacks finished the night with 22 points in the paint and 15 points from the bench, continuing to generate balanced contributions across the rotation.

Cal State LA was paced by Ariyah Smith's 21 points and Amaya Fuentes' 18 points and 11 rebounds, as the Golden Eagles shot 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.

The Lumberjacks head to Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-13, 5-8 CCAA) looking to rebound and stay within striking distance of the top of the CCAA standings as the regular season enters its final stretch.
