LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball heads south this week for an important pair of CCAA road matchups, beginning Thursday, Jan. 29 at Cal State Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m., before continuing on to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Jan. 31 for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
The Lumberjacks enter the week at 12-6 overall and 10-2 in CCAA play after earning back-to-back home wins, including a historic upset of #10 Cal Poly Pomona and a convincing victory over Cal State San Bernardino. With momentum on their side, Humboldt begins a four-game road stretch looking to remain near the top of the conference standings.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal Poly Humboldt earned one of the most memorable wins in program history Thursday night, upsetting #10 Cal Poly Pomona, 57-56, inside Lumberjack Arena. Freshman Keana Gosney delivered the game-winning basket in the final seconds as the Lumberjacks handed the Broncos their first conference loss of the season.
The defensive battle featured 14 lead changes and seven ties, with Humboldt holding Pomona to 29.7 percent shooting from the field and just 1-of-16 from three-point range. Freshman center Jordyn Smith anchored the interior with 18 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Humboldt followed with an 81-67 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon, pulling away in the second half behind a balanced offensive effort, while also taking advantage of free throws and extra possessions on technical fouls. The Lumberjacks placed five players in double figures, led by Kyori Lloyd, Sienna Cherwinski, and Riley Sanz with 17 points each.
Sanz added seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks while going 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. Humboldt controlled the glass, finished with a 38-31 rebounding advantage, and forced 21 turnovers to secure its 10th conference win of the season.
SECURING GOLD AT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Humboldt opens the road trip Thursday night at Cal State Los Angeles (12-5, 9-3 CCAA) as the Golden Eagles look to protect their home floor and their six-game winning streak, which started after Cal Poly Humboldt narrowly beat them at Lumberjack Arena at the beginning of January with a final score of 74-73.
The Lumberjacks will aim to carry over the defensive intensity and depth that fueled last weekend's success, particularly after holding two opponents under 70 points in consecutive games.
Thursday's contest marks the start of a challenging road swing, as Humboldt looks to continue its strong play away from Lumberjack Arena and maintain position near the top of the CCAA standings, as the 'Jacks sit one game out of first place.
TAKING DOWN THE TOROS
The Lumberjacks conclude the weekend Saturday afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-13, 4-8 CCAA), a matchup that has often been closely contested in recent seasons. The Toros have lost six of their last eight, including a 91-55 loss in their last head-to-head matchup against Humboldt.
Humboldt will look to lean on its balanced scoring, rebounding presence, and ability to convert at the free-throw line as it wraps up the weekend road trip. Saturday's game will be Humboldt's second road contest in three days and a key opportunity to add another conference win before the schedule intensifies further into the second half of conference play.
