Humboldt Rallies Past Cal State LA for Fifth Straight Win

LOS ANGELES — Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball continued its surge through CCAA play Wednesday night, knocking off Cal State LA 77-66 at University Gym to secure its fifth consecutive victory and remain tied for second place in the conference standings.

The Lumberjacks (12-7, 10-3 CCAA) led for 37 of the game's 40 minutes, placed five players in double figures, and leaned on a dominant bench performance that outscored the Golden Eagles 23-3.

Humboldt set the tone early, shooting 57.7 percent in the opening half while knocking down six three-pointers to take a 41-31 advantage into the break. The Jacks never trailed in the second half, answering every Cal State LA run with timely buckets and free throws down the stretch.

Drew Ardouin led all scorers with 17 points off the bench, connecting on five of his eight attempts from three-point range to spark Humboldt's perimeter attack. Brandon Bento-Jackson added 12 points while drilling four triples of his own, and Wayne Hampton III chipped in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including a pair of threes.

Rob Jenkins filled up the stat sheet with an all-around performance, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds, and eight assists while also setting the tone defensively with two steals and consistent on-ball pressure throughout the night. Zaveion Bineyard added nine points and six rebounds while anchoring the defense, recording two blocks and two steals to disrupt Cal State LA's rhythm.

Shakir Odunewu controlled the glass, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds — just one shy of a double-double — while anchoring the interior. Tyriq McNeal provided valuable minutes off the bench, contributing six rebounds, two assists, and steady defense in 15 minutes of action as the Lumberjacks controlled the tempo late.

Cal State LA was led by Deraje Agbaosi's 21 points, but Humboldt limited the Golden Eagles to 33.3 percent shooting from three and held a 32-23 advantage on the boards.

With the win, the Lumberjacks remain tied for second place in the CCAA standings with Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-5, 10-3 CCAA). Humboldt will look to keep its momentum rolling Saturday when they head to Dominguez Hills in a pivotal matchup featured as the CCAA Game of the Week.
