SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Shade Satica etched her name in the Cal Poly Humboldt record book Thursday night, becoming the program's all-time single-season steals leader while helping lift the Lumberjacks to a 74-69 overtime victory over CSUSB at Coussoulis Arena.
With two steals on the night, Satica reached 100 this season, surpassing Trina Dukes' previous record of 98 set during the 1994-95 campaign. The milestone came as part of a gritty road win that extended Humboldt's winning streak to five games and moved the 'Jacks into sole possession of third place in the CCAA standings at 15-4 (17-8 overall).
Humboldt overcame a second-half surge by the Coyotes (11-13, 8-10 CCAA) and dominated overtime, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 9-for-14 from the free throw line in the extra period to secure the victory.
The Lumberjacks led 36-24 at halftime after holding CSUSB to just 27.3 percent shooting in the second quarter. The Coyotes responded with a 22-point third quarter to erase the deficit and eventually force overtime after a tightly contested fourth period that featured seven ties and four lead changes.
In overtime, Humboldt's composure at the line proved decisive.
Jada Barnes paced the 'Jacks with 17 points, knocking down 9-of-14 free throws while adding two steals. Jordyn Smith recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocks. Satica finished with 11 points, six rebounds and her record-breaking two steals in 35 minutes of action.
Kya Kanoho provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, while Riley Sanz added 10 points and six rebounds in a team-high 41 minutes. Sienna Cherwinski chipped in 10 points, and the Lumberjacks received 13 total bench points in the win.
Humboldt forced 25 CSUSB turnovers and converted them into 23 points, a key difference in a game where the Coyotes held a 47-36 advantage on the boards and scored 20 second-chance points. The 'Jacks also finished 29-of-42 (69 percent) from the free throw line compared to CSUSB's 19-of-31 (61.3 percent).
Both teams scored 24 points in the paint, but Humboldt's defensive pressure and execution late proved to be the difference.
CSUSB was led by Princess Cassell's 12 points and Rebecca Saidoff's 11, while the Coyotes received 27 bench points.
The Lumberjacks will look to continue their momentum as they close out the road trip this weekend at No. 7 ranked and first place Cal Poly Pomona (23-2, 18-1 CCAA). Humboldt has given Pomona, who are winners of eight straight, their only conference loss this season, setting up for a highly anticipated rematch on Saturday at 1:00 PM from Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
