SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt closed out its weekend series in the Bay Area on Saturday afternoon as the Lumberjacks dropped both games of a doubleheader to San Francisco State at SFSU Softball Field. Humboldt fell 9-1 in six innings in game one before dropping a tightly contested 2-1 decision in game two.
With the results, the Lumberjacks move to 9-14 overall and 1-3 in CCAA play, while San Francisco State improves to 13-10 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
Game One – San Francisco State 9, Cal Poly Humboldt 1 (6 innings)
Cal Poly Humboldt struck first in the opening inning. After Shelby Shanks reached and moved into scoring position, the Lumberjacks capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Gators to plate the game's first run and take an early 1-0 lead.
San Francisco State answered in the third inning with four runs to take control of the game. The Gators added four more in the fourth before ending the contest in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to secure the run-rule victory.
The Lumberjacks recorded four hits in the contest. Alyssa Ramirez, Shelby Shanks, Katlyn Gifford, and Hailee Moore each tallied a hit for Humboldt.
Mason Hatton (2-3) took the loss after pitching 2.1 innings and striking out two. Ariana Bottel worked the final 3.1 innings in relief.
Game Two – San Francisco State 2, Cal Poly Humboldt 1
The second game of the afternoon turned into a pitcher's duel highlighted by a strong performance from Lily Fournier in the circle.
After three scoreless innings, the Lumberjacks broke through in the fourth. Shelby Shanks reached base and came around to score when Katlyn Gifford delivered an RBI single down the right-field line to give Humboldt a 1-0 lead.
San Francisco State tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Ashley Rocha before taking the lead in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Marissa Jordan that plated the eventual winning run.
Humboldt finished with four hits, led by Marissa Brody, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Shanks and Gifford added the other two hits for the Lumberjacks.
Fournier (4-8) delivered a solid outing despite the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings while striking out five.

Cal Poly Humboldt will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Dominican before finally opening its home schedule at Humboldt Softball Field. The Lumberjacks will host Cal State Dominguez Hills in their home CCAA series opener on March 20 and 21.
