ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt softball split Saturday's doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills, but used late-game heroics in the nightcap to secure a 3-1 series victory over the Toros at Humboldt Softball Field.
After falling 7-4 in game one, the Lumberjacks (13-16, 4-4 CCAA) rallied for a thrilling 5-4 win in game two, highlighted by Katlyn Gifford's go-ahead three-run home run and a game-ending double play from Bella Garcia.
"I'm really proud of the fight this group showed all weekend," said head coach Megan Corriea. "They never backed down, even when we were trailing, and you saw that resilience come through in big moments. It's all about finding ways to win."
GAME ONE: DOMINGUEZ HILLS 7, HUMBOLDT 4
Dominguez Hills (22-12, 4-7 CCAA) jumped out early with a four-run second inning and never relinquished control despite Humboldt outhitting the Toros 10-10.
The Jacks responded with a three-run third inning sparked by Bella Garcia, who finished a perfect 3-for-4 at the plate. Marissa Brody doubled home a run, while Katlyn Gifford and Mason Hatton each added RBI singles to cut the deficit to 5-3.
After the Toros extended their lead to 7-3 on a two-run homer in the fourth, Humboldt chipped away in the fifth as Gifford delivered again with an RBI double, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Brody added a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored, while Shelby Shanks reached base twice and scored a run.
In the circle, Mason Hatton provided 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just two runs on four hits, while Ariana Bottel (4-3) was charged with the loss.
GAME TWO: HUMBOLDT 5, DOMINGUEZ HILLS 4
The nightcap delivered all the drama.
Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, Humboldt mounted its comeback. Marissa Brody opened the rally with an RBI single to make it 4-2 before Gifford delivered the decisive swing.
With two runners aboard, Katlyn Gifford crushed a go-ahead three-run home run to right center—her fourth of the season—giving the Jacks a 5-4 lead and igniting the home crowd.
Gifford finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Shelby Shanks added two hits and Lauren Aubrey chipped in an RBI double earlier in the contest.
The drama wasn't over.
In the top of the seventh, Dominguez Hills loaded the bases with one out, threatening to steal the game back. But Bella Garcia came up clutch at third, snagging a line drive and immediately diving to tag the runner for a game-ending double play, sealing the victory in spectacular fashion.
Lily Fournier (6-8) went the distance in the circle, scattering 11 hits while allowing four runs (three earned) to earn the complete-game win.
