POMONA, Calif. – Behind dominant performances from Zaveion Bineyard and Shakir Odunewu, the third-seeded Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team earned a 62-52 victory over sixth-seed Cal State San Marcos Thursday evening in the CCAA Tournament quarterfinals at Kellogg Arena.
With the win, the Lumberjacks (16-13, 13-9 CCAA) advance to Friday's semifinal round where they will face No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m. Humboldt has now won three straight games, powered by the consistent play of Bineyard and Odunewu during the stretch.
The victory also marked head coach DJ Broome's first career postseason win at the helm of the Lumberjacks.
"Gutty win for the guys tonight," said head coach DJ Broome. "Come playoff time, to be able to have a defensive performance like that when your offense isn't at its norm, shows how far we've come as a group. Very proud to be moving forward with this group."
Bineyard Continues to Shine
Bineyard delivered one of his most complete efforts of the season, finishing with a team-high 18 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He added nine rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in 38 minutes of action.
Odunewu controlled the paint on both ends, posting a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, including four offensive boards. He went 5-of-7 from the free throw line and helped anchor a Humboldt defense that limited San Marcos to just 34 percent shooting and 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from three-point range.
Balanced Attack, Clutch Execution
Rob Jenkins added 13 points and four assists while logging 37 minutes at the guard spot. Dorrell Thomas provided a key spark off the bench, scoring 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting, including a three-pointer, and converting 3-of-4 from the free throw line as part of Humboldt's 15 bench points.
Wayne Hampton III dished out a team-high five assists, helping the 'Jacks shoot 45.2 percent from the floor for the game. Humboldt knocked down 19-of-26 free throws (73.1 percent), including 12-of-16 in the second half to maintain separation down the stretch.
Defense Sets the Tone
The contest featured seven lead changes and was tied twice, but Humboldt seized control late in the first half and carried a 26-21 advantage into the break. The Lumberjacks limited the Cougars (14-14, 11-11 CCAA) to 8-of-26 shooting in the opening 20 minutes and forced 13 total turnovers on the night.
Humboldt matched San Marcos with 28 points in the paint and out-rebounded the Cougars 33-30, including 27 defensive rebounds to limit second-chance opportunities.
Micah Boone led San Marcos with 19 points, while Chris Carrillo added 18 in the loss.
