POMONA, Calif. — Cal Poly Humboldt made its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament Championship appearance since 2016 on Saturday night, battling undefeated and No. 1-seeded Cal State East Bay at Kellogg Arena. Despite a determined effort, the Lumberjacks fell 80-63 to the Pioneers, who improved to a perfect 30-0 overall.
Humboldt (17-14) closed its CCAA postseason run as the tournament runner-up under first-year head coach DJ Broome and his staff — a remarkable accomplishment for a squad picked eighth in the CCAA Preseason Poll.
The championship contest featured five ties and eight lead changes, as the Lumberjacks went toe-to-toe with the conference's top team early. East Bay carried a 35-27 lead into halftime before shooting 48.4% from the field and 54.5% from three-point range in the second half to create separation.
Cal Poly Humboldt shot 37.7% (20-of-53) from the floor and went 18-of-25 (72%) from the free throw line. The 'Jacks competed on the glass with 36 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards that led to 18 second-chance points, and tallied 30 points in the paint.
Odunewu, Bineyard Earn All-Tournament Honors
Shakir Odunewu led Humboldt with 18 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds to record a double-double. The senior added five offensive boards and anchored the Lumberjacks inside throughout the tournament. For his efforts over the three-game stretch, Odunewu was named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.
Zaveion Bineyard also earned CCAA All-Tournament Team honors after another strong outing in the title game, finishing with eight points and six rebounds while providing steady defensive presence throughout the postseason run.
Drew Ardouin contributed 14 points, hitting 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Rob Jenkins added 13 points, six rebounds and two assists, going 6-of-8 at the stripe. Dorrell Thomas chipped in five points off the bench on a perfect 2-for-2 shooting performance, including a three-pointer.
East Bay was paced by Jaayden Bush's 23 points, while Josh Ijeh recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Awaiting Selection Sunday
With East Bay claiming the CCAA's automatic bid, the Lumberjacks now turn their attention to Selection Sunday. Humboldt remains firmly in the conversation for an NCAA Division II West Regional at-large berth and could enter the tournament field as a low seed.
The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday at 8:00 p.m. and will stream live on NCAA.com.
Regardless of Sunday's outcome, the 2025-26 Lumberjacks have delivered one of the program's most memorable seasons in recent history — advancing to their first CCAA Championship game in a decade, earning multiple All-Tournament selections, and transforming an eighth-place preseason projection into a postseason run that has Humboldt on the doorstep of the NCAA Tournament in Coach Broome's first year at the helm.
