ARCATA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team will continue CCAA play on the road this weekend as the Lumberjacks travel to San Marcos, Calif. for a four-game series against No. 3 Cal State San Marcos.
Humboldt and San Marcos will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., followed by another doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Lumberjacks enter the weekend 19-20 overall and 10-8 in CCAA play, sitting third in the conference standings. They will face a Cal State San Marcos squad that currently sits atop the CCAA standings, making this one of Humboldt's biggest tests of the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal Poly Humboldt is coming off a strong conference showing after taking three of four games from Cal State Monterey Bay, then splitting a short two-game series against Cal State San Bernardino, with the final two games of the weekend canceled due to weather.
The Lumberjacks split Thursday's doubleheader, highlighted by a 7-5 victory. Friday's games were cancelled due to weather.
Across the short series, Humboldt showcased its offensive depth and resilience, with key contributions from Katlyn Gifford, Marissa Brody, Shelby Shanks, and Bella Garcia, while Lily Fournier and the pitching staff continued to provide important innings in the circle.
TAKING ON THE COUGARS
Cal State San Marcos enters the weekend as the top team in the CCAA, holding a 20-4 conference record and 38-5 overall mark, and has established itself as one of the strongest teams in the nation.
The Cougars have been dominant throughout conference play, combining consistent pitching with a balanced offensive attack that has allowed them to separate from the rest of the standings.
For Humboldt, this series presents a major opportunity to measure itself against the top team in the conference while also making a push in the standings. The Lumberjacks have not lost a conference series since opening weekend and continue to trend upward during the second half of conference play.
Humboldt will look to rely on its timely hitting and comeback ability, which has been a defining trait in recent weeks, along with continued production from the middle of the lineup and steady performances in the circle.
All time, the 'Jacks are 20-11 versus the Cougars and post a 9-7 away record in San Marcos.
