GOLDEN, Colo. - Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball closed the Oredigger Volleyball Classic with its second consecutive victory Saturday morning, sweeping UCCS 3-0 inside Lockridge Arena. The Lumberjacks prevailed in three tightly contested sets, 26-24, 25-23 and 25-22.
The teams traded points throughout an opening set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes. UCCS took a 17-16 advantage before Humboldt responded with back-to-back points to regain the lead. The Mountain Lions later fought off set point and evened the score at 24-24, but the Lumberjacks captured the next two points to secure a 26-24 victory.
Humboldt carried that momentum into the second set, using a 5-0 run to establish an early 6-2 lead. The Lumberjacks extended their advantage to 18-12 before UCCS rallied and tied the frame at 23-23.
Isabella Hartwig answered with a kill to give Humboldt set point before teaming with
Avary Spoja for a block that closed out the 25-23 win.
The third set remained close through a 16-16 tie. Humboldt then scored three consecutive points, including a block from Spoja and
Phoebe Bland, to move ahead 19-16. The Lumberjacks maintained their advantage down the stretch and completed the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Humboldt displayed a balanced offensive attack, with
Graysen Trupp,
Emma Fauth,
Isabella Hartwig, and
Avary Spoja each recording eight kills. Trupp led the group with a .471 hitting percentage and did not commit an error on 17 attacks.
Emma Fauth hit .467 with only one error, while Hartwig finished at .333 and Spoja hit .250.
Branson Lennon added seven kills and 10 digs.
Brielle Wilson directed the offense with 23 assists, while
Claire Crawford contributed 14 assists and matched
Elizabeth Jade Andrade with a team-high 12 digs.
The Lumberjacks hit .290 for the match and posted a .333 hitting percentage in each of the final two sets. Humboldt also held advantages in digs (45-42) and total blocks (6-3), while limiting UCCS to a .217 hitting percentage.
The victory moves Humboldt to 2-1 on the season. After dropping their opening match to Colorado School of Mines, the Lumberjacks responded with consecutive victories over Colorado Christian and UCCS to close the tournament.

The Lumberjacks return to Arcata for their home opener Thursday, Sept. 3, when they face Northwest Nazarene at 4 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena as part of the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic.
