ATHERTON, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer scored while playing a man down and held off Colorado School of Mines for a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Wunderlich Field in the Lumberjacks' final match of Menlo Kickoff Weekend.
Humboldt controlled the attacking play throughout the first half, outshooting the Orediggers 12-4 and placing four attempts on target.
Shota Lam produced the Lumberjacks' first shot on goal in the 22nd minute, while
Ethan Gyenis forced two saves and
Gabriel Tucci added another attempt on target before halftime.
The Lumberjacks continued to apply pressure after the break but were reduced to 10 players following a red card in the 79th minute. Despite the disadvantage, Humboldt broke through less than five minutes later.
Lam delivered a free kick into the penalty area in the 84th minute, and
Robert Somerville headed it home from the center of the box to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Somerville's first of the season and proved to be the match winner.
Colorado School of Mines pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Humboldt goalkeeper Álvaro Nieves made two saves over the final two minutes to preserve the victory. Nieves finished with three saves and earned his first shutout of the season.
Humboldt held a 19-10 advantage in shots and put six attempts on target compared to three for the Orediggers. The Lumberjacks also earned seven corner kicks while limiting Colorado School of Mines to four.
Lam led Humboldt with three shots, placing two on target, and recorded the assist on Somerville's winning goal.
Jai Sternhall also attempted three shots, while Gyenis placed both of his attempts on frame.
The victory moves Humboldt to 1-1 on the season and gives the Lumberjacks their first win of the 2026 campaign.
