Humboldt Falls in Final Minute to CUI

ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer fell 3-2 to Concordia University Irvine Saturday afternoon at College Creek Field in their final match of the Humboldt Kickoff Classic. The Lumberjacks held a pair of second-half leads before the Golden Eagles scored twice in the final six minutes, including the match winner with less than a minute remaining.

The teams played to a scoreless first half despite Humboldt controlling much of the attacking play. The Lumberjacks outshot Concordia Irvine 4-1 over the opening 45 minutes and did not allow a shot on goal.

Humboldt broke through in the 60th minute when Sari Murphy scored off an assist from Heidie Munoz to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 advantage. Concordia Irvine responded just 67 seconds later as Ashley Grubert scored off an assist from Irandy Erazo to even the match at 1-1.

The Lumberjacks reclaimed the lead in the 76th minute. Kyla Okamoto found the back of the net on aheader off an assist from Lucy Al-Chokhachy, putting Humboldt ahead 2-1.

Concordia Irvine answered again in the 85th minute when Sarah Venegas scored off an assist from Tess Doucette to tie the match at 2-2. The Golden Eagles completed the late comeback with 46 seconds remaining as Bella Barrett scored the game-winning goal, giving Concordia Irvine a 3-2 victory.

Humboldt controlled the statistical battle, outshooting Concordia Irvine 15-6 and putting five shots on target compared to four for the Golden Eagles. The Lumberjacks produced 11 of their 15 shots in the second half, while Concordia Irvine held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Charlotte Alvarez led Humboldt with four shots, including one on goal. Murphy, Al-Chokhachy, Isis-Jade Bryant and Hayden Anderson each recorded two shots.

The loss moves Humboldt to 1-1 on the season after the Lumberjacks opened the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Central Washington.

The Lumberjacks begin a two-match trip to Hawai'i on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when they face Hawai'i Pacific at Waipi'o Soccer Complex in Oahu.
