Jacks Journey South to Face Nighthawks, Warriors

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Cal Poly Humboldt men's soccer team continues non-conference play this week with matches against Northwest Nazarene and Jessup. The Lumberjacks will return to Atherton to face the Nighthawks on Thursday, Sept. 3, before traveling to Rocklin for a Saturday matchup with the Warriors.

Humboldt will meet Northwest Nazarene at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Wunderlich Field. The Lumberjacks will then face Jessup at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Warrior Field.

LAST TIME OUT

Humboldt enters the week with a 1-1 record after splitting its first two matches at Menlo Kickoff Weekend.

The Lumberjacks fell 4-1 to Fresno Pacific in their season opener despite taking an early lead. Gabriel Tucci opened the scoring in the 19th minute off assists from Shota Lam and Erwin Manibusan Jr. before the Sunbirds took control.

Humboldt bounced back Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Colorado School of Mines. Robert Somerville broke the scoreless tie in the 84th minute, converting a chance created by Lam to give the Lumberjacks their first win of the season.

Humboldt outshot Mines 19-10 and placed six attempts on target. Alvaro Nieves made three saves to secure the clean sheet, while Lam finished the weekend with an assist in each match.

NIGHTHAWKS NEXT

Northwest Nazarene enters Thursday's match with a 0-0-2 record after opening its season with consecutive 1-1 draws against Westminster and MSU Denver.

Rylan McPherson scored the Nighthawks' goal against Westminster, while Caleb Putney found the equalizer against MSU Denver. Northwest Nazarene has scored during the first half of both matches this season.

Thursday will mark Humboldt's third consecutive match at Wunderlich Field. The Lumberjacks will look to build upon the pressure that produced 19 shots and seven corner kicks in their win over the Orediggers.

WRAPPING IT UP AT WARRIORS

Humboldt will conclude the week Saturday morning against Jessup at Warrior Field in Rocklin.

The Warriors enter the week with a 0-1-1 record after falling 1-0 to Cal State San Marcos and playing Simpson to a scoreless draw. Jessup will face Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday before hosting the Lumberjacks on Saturday.

Humboldt will look to finish its four-match season-opening road stretch with another positive result before continuing north for two additional non-conference contests.
