ATHERTON, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt women's volleyball captured the opening set and built a late lead in the fourth set, but Menlo rallied to earn a 3-1 conference victory Saturday evening inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion. The Oaks won by set scores of 17-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.
The Lumberjacks delivered their strongest offensive performance in the opening set, recording 12 kills with three errors on 25 attacks for a .360 hitting percentage. With the score tied at 15, Humboldt used a 10-2 closing run to secure the 25-17 victory.
Phoebe Bland delivered consecutive service aces during the surge, while
Kendall Fenstermacher served the final five points.
Menlo responded in the second set, breaking open a close frame with a 10-1 run to establish a 23-13 advantage. Humboldt scored three of the next four points before the Oaks closed out the set 25-16 to even the match.
The Lumberjacks stayed within two at 17-15 during the third set, but Menlo answered with six consecutive points and went on to claim the frame 25-17.
Humboldt appeared poised to force a deciding fifth set after building an 18-14 advantage in the fourth. The Oaks responded with 11 unanswered points, however, completing the comeback with a 25-18 set victory.
Graysen Trupp and
Tatyana Jennings shared the team lead with 13 kills apiece. Trupp hit .357 with only three errors on 28 attacks, while Jennings posted a .321 hitting percentage and added two block assists.
Bland recorded four service aces and three block assists.
Brielle Wilson and
Claire Crawford each distributed 16 assists, with Wilson adding six digs and two aces.
Elizabeth Jade Andrade and
Hailey Colyar led the back row with nine digs each.
Humboldt finished with 40 kills, nine service aces, 46 digs and four total blocks. Menlo recorded 57 kills and hit .267 for the match.
The result moved the Lumberjacks to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play.

The Lumberjacks will return to Lumberjack Arena on Thursday, Sept. 24, for a rematch against Menlo. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
