Humboldt Turns Back Menlo in Five-Set Thriller

ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball delivered 16 total blocks and held off Menlo in five sets Thursday evening during 70's Night inside Lumberjack Arena. The Lumberjacks earned the 3-2 victory by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 24-26 and 15-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The teams traded points throughout the opening set before Humboldt broke an 18-18 tie. Graysen Trupp recorded three kills during the closing stretch, while Claire Crawford secured the 25-22 win with a set-ending dig-turned-kill.

Humboldt carried the momentum into the second frame and built a commanding 20-13 advantage. Menlo cut into the deficit late, but Tatyana Jennings closed the set with a kill to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 match lead.

Menlo responded by taking the third set 25-18 and forced a deciding frame after escaping with a 26-24 victory in the fourth. Humboldt reached match point at 24-23 following consecutive blocks from Phoebe Bland, but the Oaks scored the final three points to extend the contest.

The fifth set was tied at nine before Humboldt took control. Trupp recorded two kills during a 6-2 closing run, Avary Spoja added another and Bland finished the match with a block to secure the 15-11 victory.

Trupp led Humboldt with 17 kills and did not commit an attacking error across 31 attempts, finishing with a .548 hitting percentage. Jennings added 11 kills, three service aces and two solo blocks, while Spoja contributed 10 kills and four total blocks.

Bland controlled the net with a match-high seven total blocks, including six solo stops. Rahni Greene added three solo blocks as Humboldt held Menlo to a .143 hitting percentage.

Elizabeth Jade Andrade anchored the back row with 21 digs. Crawford recorded 20 assists, 12 digs and a service ace, while Brielle Wilson distributed a team-high 24 assists. Kendall Fenstermacher added 12 digs and two aces, and Hailey Colyar finished with 10 digs.

Humboldt recorded 51 kills, 83 digs, seven service aces and 16 total blocks while hitting .211 for the match.

The victory improved the Lumberjacks to 6-5 overall while their CCAA record remains 2-2.

UP NEXT

The Lumberjacks will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena for Youth & Camper Day. Admission is free for all home volleyball games this season.
