Megan Hankins-Maldonado was hired as the first assistant coach in the Michelle Bento-Jackson era of the Humboldt State women’s basketball program. Hankins-Maldonado brings a decade of coaching experience to the North Coast at all levels of NCAA basketball, as well as high school hoops.
Hankins-Maldonado joins the Lumberjacks following a two-year stint as the Head Coach of De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. After securing the best win-loss record for a rookie head coach in the CCCAA in 2014-15, Hankins-Maldonado improved her win total by four games in her 2015-16 campaign, compiling a 16-12 overall record and going 8-4 in conference play in her second year.
Hankins-Maldonado’s first head coaching job was at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif., where she spent two seasons.
Hankins-Maldonado brings CCAA experience to the Green and Gold, having spent time as an assistant coach with Cal State Monterey Bay from 2010-11. That season, the Otters led all NCAA Division II programs in scoring defense en route to a CCAA Championship, a 27-4 overall record, and making the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.
She also served as Video Coordinator with Division I University of San Francisco for two seasons.
Her coaching career began at the College of San Mateo, where she worked from 2006-09. During her third season with the Bulldogs, the team went to playoffs for the first time in six years, making the Northern California Junior College Regional. For the first time in California history, that all-freshman led team made the regional playoffs.
A native of Pasadena, Calif., Hankins-Maldonado played her college ball at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif. During her senior season, she held the record for the most rebounds in a single season (averaged eight rebounds per game) and received the Argonaut Award, which is given to the hardest worker on the team.
Hankins-Maldonado graduated from NDNU in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then with her masters in 2006 in clinical psychology marriage and family therapy.
Megan and her husband Dan Maldonado were married in May of 2016 and live with their dog Hooper. They have two children Uriah (3) and Amara (1) and reside in Eureka.
