LA JOLLA – Despite out blocking No. 15 nationally ranked UC San Diego 14 to 2, the Humboldt State volleyball team fell in four sets Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition.
 
The Lumberjacks fell to 4-6 in CCAA play and hold a 6-11 overall mark, while the Tritons are 14-3 overall and hold an 8-2 conference mark.
 
UCSD took set one, 25-17, recording 14 kills, five from Sylvia Schmidt, and 12 digs to take set one, 25-17, from HSU.
 
The Jacks started off on the right foot recording set two's first three points. The Tritons tied the set at 9-9, but six errors gave the Jacks a 15-11 lead. UCSD brought the score to a tie two more times, last at 19-19, before taking the set 25-21.
 
The Lumberjacks used a .220 hitting percentage to defeat the Tritons in the third set, 25-21, to expand the match to four sets. The Jacks took an early lead that UCSD wasn't able to close until 20-20. With a service ace from Danielle Wells and Mallory Briney Kill, along with Triton errors, secured HSU's win.
 
Set four showed intensity with five lead changes and nine ties, last at 20-20, before three attacking errors on the Jacks and kills by Cara Simonsen and Elaine Chen ended the match with a 25-21 final.
 
“We got our fire back and played really well tonight,” said Humboldt State's head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra. “We made some good progress and we're anxious to get into the second half of the CCAA.”
 
Registering double-doubles for the Jacks were Lynsey Adams who paced the team 12 kills and tallied 10 digs and Liz Shannon with 14 assists and 12 digs. Joliann Arzadon dished out 12 assists as Dani Nelson contributed 14 digs.
 
Schmidt paced the Tritons with 13 kills (.294 hitting percentage), while Hillary Williamson and Rebecca Bailey both followed with eight apiece. Chen posted a double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs, as Michelle Torres followed with 11 digs.
 
Humboldt State returns to Lumberjack Arena after two weeks on the road, as they host Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State, Friday and Saturday respectively. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
