CARSON – Playing its third straight nationally ranked California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent, the Humboldt State men's soccer team were defeated by No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0 Friday.
With the loss, the Jacks dropped to 6-3-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the CCAA. The Toros moved to 10-1-1 and 5-1-1 in CCAA play.
“We didn't create very much offensively tonight,” said HSU head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “(Dominguez Hills) was the better team tonight and they deserved the win.”
The game got off to a fast start, with both teams recording shots in the first two minutes. The Toros continued to put pressure of the Jacks defense, keeping the ball on the HSU half of the field.
CSUDH broke through on the 18-minute mark when Andrew Marinez took a Kyle Holland pass and riffled a shot in the far corner of the goal.
“The shot was knuckling quite a bit,” said Cumbo. “I don't think there are very many goalkeepers at this level who could've stopped it.”
The Jacks had their chances to score in the second half, most notably
Josh Suggs hitting the post just seven minutes after the break.
Despite the Jacks' best efforts, the Toros kept the pressure going, with HSU keeper
Drew Ryan recording eight of his 12 saves in the second half. For the game, the Toros outshot HSU 29-6.
CSUDH got an all-important insurance goal with four minutes remaining on an unassisted goal by Scott Mariano.
The Jacks will look to look to get back to their winning ways in the CCAA when they travel to La Jolla to face UC San Diego. Kickoff Sunday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
