Wildcats hold off Jacks' chances, prevail 1-0

ARCATA – Evan Armstrong's goal less-than three minutes into the second half was the difference as the No. 5 regionally ranked Chico State Wildcats defeated Humboldt State, 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Friday.

With the loss the Jacks fall to 8-7-4 overall and 3-7-3 in CCAA action while the Wildcats improve to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in CCAA play.

After a quiet first half, the Wildcats scored the only goal of the game just 2:35 into the second half when Armstrong took a pass from Zac Crim just before HSU goalkeeper Drew Ryan could get to the ball and put it into the back of the empty net.

The Jacks had opportunities to level the score towards the end of the game, most notably a chance by forward Roland Demombynes midway through the half, but nothing came of it and the Wildcats recorded their eighth shutout of the year.

For the game, the Wildcats outshot the Jacks 17-9, with both teams recording four shots on goal.

Humboldt State will close its 2008 season Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus at 2 p.m. in Redwood Bowl. Prior to the game Ryan,
this season's lone senior, will be honored.
