Big blocks help the Jacks defeat Gators 3-2

Joliann Arzadon's triple-double paced the Jacks in their 3-2 victory over the Gators
SAN FRANCISCO – Out blocking San Francisco State 16 to four, was enough as the Humboldt State volleyball team defeated the Gators 3-2, Friday.

With the win the Lumberjacks now post an 8-14 overall record and improve to a 6-9 California Collegiate Athletic Association mark, while the Gators hold an 11-13 overall mark and are 5-11 in CCAA competition.

SF State began set one tallying six of the first seven points for a lead that they never let up. The Lumberjacks were able to cut the Gators' ten point led at 13-3 down to six for a 24-18 score, before a kill by Lisa Morgan ended the set at 25-18.

Despite Humboldt State's .250 hitting percentage, set two ended in favor of SF State, 25-21. Even though the Gators kept the Jacks at arms length, the Jacks were able to take advantage of the Gators' errors and smashed down big kills to cut down the Gators' seven-point gap to one at 22-21. But two kills and an attacking error on the Jacks ended the set.

“The first two sets we loss due to errors,” Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra said. “We were able to steady ourselves out, play smart and demonstrated good defense.”

In turn of fate, the Lumberjacks defense helped to take the next three sets with big blocks and 107 digs.

Joliann Arzadon paced the team with a triple-double night posting 11 kills, 18 assists and 16 digs. Lynsey Adams (12 kills, 15 digs), Liz Shannon (27 assists, 14 digs) and Mallory Briney (10 kills, 18 digs) contributed double-double figures, while Dani Nelson's 28 digs led six Jacks with double-digit digs.

Sloane Williams paced the Gators with 14 kills and a .560 hitting percentage, while Kyle Lamet and Beth Perkins followed closely behind with 10 kills apiece. Mary Maiocco dished out 32 digs, while Christina Johnson led SF State with 28 digs.

“I think the win in the fourth set got our momentum going for us and we rode that into the fifth,” Woodstra said.

Humboldt State concludes its final road trip as they head to Seaside for a 7 p.m. match-up against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters.
