POMONA – The Humboldt State volleyball team fell in three to American Volleyball Coaches Association nationally ranked No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona, Saturday in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
 
The Lumberjacks now hold a 6-9 overall record and 4-4 CCAA mark, while the Broncos post a 9-4 overall and 6-2 CCAA record.
 
In set one, CPP took an early 12-6 lead before the Jacks closed the gap to 15-14. The Broncos took advantage of attacking errors for a four-point run that gave them momentum for a 25-17 final score.
 
Set two showed a battle for lead before CPP pulled away with a 19-13 lead and never let up. Two service aces, two ball handling errors and a kill helped the Broncos take the set 25-15.
 
The Lumberjacks continued to battle early in the set, last tying the Broncos 9-9, before they went on a three-point surge. The Jacks closed in on the Broncos at 22-18, but three kills from Vanessa Williams helped CPP to a 25-19 score.
 
“Cal Poly Pomona is playing well right now,” said Humboldt State's head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra. “We played well but in the long rallies we just couldn't finish.”
 
Lynsey Adams paced the Jacks with eight kills, while Liz Shannon recorded 14 assists and Dani Nelson tallied 16 digs.
 
Anne-Marie Hofmans and Vanessa Williams both posted team-highs with 10 kills while Jasmine Davis dished out 35 assists.
 
The Lumberjacks continue to hit the road in CCAA competition as they travel to Rohnert Park, Wednesday to face Sonoma State and then travel to San Diego as they take on the University of California, San Diego. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
