Humboldt State opens homestand Friday

ARCATA – Humboldt State's volleyball team returns home for its final two weeks of California Collegiate Athletic Association play, starting with matches against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.

Live Stats: All Humboldt State volleyball matches can be tracked on a home computer by accessing the LiveStats component through the Lumberjacks' web site at http://livestats.internetconsult.com/humboldt/wvball/.

Lumberjack Notes: The Lumberjacks concluded their road portion of conference play last weekend, defeating San Francisco State in five sets Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay in three Saturday. After registering two wins this weekend the Jacks improved their overall record to 9-14 and CCAA mark to 7-9. …Program progress is obvious when comparing this year's current status to where the Lumberjacks were a year ago. With four matches to play, they've already surpassed their league win total from last year when they finished 6-12 in the CCAA. Overall, the Jacks posted a 10-16 record in the 2007 season, and one more victory in 2008 would match that total. …Humboldt State's outstanding blocking had the Jacks ranked No. 8 among all NCAA Division II programs in that category heading into last week's matches. They helped themselves with two more strong efforts, totaling 43 blocks on the road to improve their league-leading average to 2.5 per set. …Individually, Toni Kroeker has established herself as one of the top blockers in the nation, ranking 13th with an average of 1.21 per set.

Opponents Notes: No. 18 nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona enters this weekend with a 15-6 overall mark and 12-4 conference record.  The Broncos ended their six-match winning streak with a loss to No. 12 UC San Diego in five sets on Friday. The Broncos are in a three-way tie with Sonoma State University and UC San Diego for the No. 2 slot in conference. …Cal Poly Pomona falls just behind the Jacks in blocking, averaging 2.39 blocks per set, while Vanessa Williams leads the conference in blocks with an average of 1.23 per set. …No. 3 nationally ranked Cal State San Bernardino is 21-3 overall and 13-3 in CCAA play. The Coyotes split this weekend's matches, losing to Cal Poly Pomona in three sets Friday and defeating UC San Diego in three sets on Saturday. …The Coyotes make an appearance in various statistical conference categories, including the No.1 spot in assists and kills, averaging 13.31 per set and 14.15 per set, respectively. In the individual categories, Jessica Granados leads the league in kills, averaging 4.24 per set, while Sara Hoffman is first in assists, averaging 11.72 per set.

Head to Head: Humboldt State trails 1-10 in its all-time series against Cal Poly Pomona. During the teams previous meeting this season, the Broncos defeated the Jacks 3-0. …The Lumberjacks hold a 3-6 overall record against Cal State San Bernardino, including a three-game sweep by the Coyotes earlier this season.

Woodstra's Words: “Last weekend we played more consistent and aggressive. We stayed away from unforced errors and we want to carry that over into this weekend's match-ups,” Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra said. “We are taking each match, one match at a time.”… “There is no time to look forward or backward. We want to stay focused on what is going on right now.”
