Jacks drop two at Otter Classic

SEASIDE – Humboldt State's volleyball team dropped both matches on Saturday against Wayne State and Western Oregon 3-1, at the Otter Classic, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.

Close sets fell in favor of Wayne State during HSU's, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, loss in its first match of the day.

Lynsey Adams tallied 17 kills and 12 digs, while Mallory Briney and Joliann Arzadon followed with 10 kills and 12 digs, respectively. Elizabeth Shannon marked 39 assists.

“I think we did well on offense and defense, but were a little too up and down,” said HSU's interim head volleyball coach James Kealalio. “We got things that needed to be done on both sides, but we need to work on winning the point in long rallies. We let the other team get the best of us during those points. We need to re-group like we were able to do yesterday.”

Wayne State's Lauren Mallast hit .464, putting away 16 kills, while Sarha Gosselin added 11 kills, for the team's second win in the tournament.

The Jacks, who now hold a 1-3 overall record, fell 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, against Western Oregon, in the final match of the day.

Arzadon led the team with 19 kills, seven of which helped the team confirm set-three's win, after the team went on a seven-point run for a 24-19 lead.

Adams contributed 14 kills and 11 digs, while Briney added 11 kills and nine digs. Shannon dished out 43 assists and 14 digs, while
Dani Nelson led the team defensively with 19 digs.

Western Oregon took the victory in the final set as they went on a 10-point run for a 22-14 lead. Haley Kostrba posted a .372 killing percentage with 18 kills and 15 digs, while Sharon Peterson and Stacey Bennett followed with 10 kills apiece.

“I think it was good for us to come down here and see another team on the other side of the net,” said Kealalio. “This was a good evaluation of our skills and were we stand. We know what we need to work on and I know we can improve and make the needed adjustments.”

Humboldt State makes its home debut Friday when the Jacks host the Humboldt Invitational in the East Gym. The Jacks open the event with an 11 a.m. match against Simpson University, and play an 8 p.m. match against Western Oregon.
