Jacks come out flat, drop CCAA opener

CHICO –After getting out to the best start in program history, the Humboldt State men's soccer team dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, 2-0 to No. 20 nationally ranked Chico State on Sunday.

With the loss, the Jacks fell to 3-1-1 and 0-1 in CCAA action while Chico State improved to 3-0 and 1-0 in the CCAA.

“We deserved to lose this one today,” Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said . “We came out flat and it cost us.”

The Wildcats had opportunities to score during a scoreless first half, but HSU keeper Drew Ryan recorded six of his nine saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Chico State broke through in the 56th minute when Zac Crim headed home a cross off the foot of Adam Raish. Nine minutes later the Wildcats struck again when Ryan Struckmyer knocked in Crim's deflected cross, doubling Chico's lead.

For the game, the Wildcats outshot the Jacks 25-13.

“We just gave them too many opportunities to score and they did a good job of executing their opportunities,” said  Cumbo.

The Jacks return home next weekend looking to capture their first CCAA victory. On Friday, Cal State Monterey Bay comes to Redwood Bowl with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
