Lumberjacks keep up torrid pace with win over CSUMB

ARCATA — Stretching its winning streak to four straight matches, Humboldt State swept past Cal State Monterey Bay in three straight sets Friday for a 25-11, 26-24, 25-23 California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball victory.

Lynsey Adams and Jo Arzadon again did the damage for HSU, finishing with 14 and 10 kills respectively. Also contributing was a strong blocking effort from Mallory Briney and Toni Kroeker, who helped Humboldt State improve to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA.

Rehann Fall had eight kills and eight digs for the Otters, who fell to 4-10 and remained winless in league at 0-5. Hitting errors plagued CSUMB all evening, leading to a .063 mark for the match.

Blasting out of the blocks quickly in the opening set, the Lumberjacks gained a 10-4 advantage on Briney's service ace. Following a timeout, Cal State Monterey Bay briefly checked the Jacks' momentum with Annique Melese's kill, but the Jacks distanced themselves from the Otters again. Adams eventually finished the set with a resounding kill.

"I thought we played a very good first part of the match," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We were a bit streaky in the third set. We need to play like we did in the first set throughout the entire match."

Cal State Monterey Bay hurt itself repeatedly with hitting errors, posting a negative .038 percentage for the first set. But the Otters found success early in the second set, claiming a 7-3 lead on Tiffaney Riggs' tip.

They stretched the lead to 10-5 before the Lumberjacks regained their form, winning long rallies that featured Dani Nelson's defensive efforts and cutting the lead to 12-11. After an Otters' timeout, HSU committed consecutive hitting errors, inciting the Jacks' coaches to call a timeout of their own.

Trailing by as many as four points, the Jacks slowly worked their way back into the set, tying it at 19-19 on an Otters' error.  Briney and Kroeker earned match point at 24-22 with a big block, only to see the Otters pull even at 24-24. A tip by Wells and Arzadon's ace finally ended the set in HSU's favor.

Surges characterized the third set, including seven straight points by the Jacks that allowed them to gain an 8-4 lead. However, a couple of HSU hitting errors saw the lead trimmed to one.

Humboldt State led 14-10, but a pair of Richardson kills fueled another rally, and the Otters drew even at 14-14 on another HSU miscue. Cal State Monterey Bay gained the lead at 16-15, only to watch the Jacks edge ahead again and finally take the match on an Otters' hitting error.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is Saturday's match against San Francisco State, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
