ARCATA — Obviously comfortable with their new surroundings, Humboldt State's volleyball team claimed a 3-0 win over Simpson University on Friday in the first intercollegiate contest played in Lumberjack Arena.

Swinging away from the start, HSU rolled off 25-12, 25-14, 25-10 victories over the Redhawks in the opening match of the Humboldt Tournament on Friday. Lynsey Adams and Jo Arzadon put down nine kills each, while Toni Kroeker contributed seven and a team-high six blocks.

In the Jacks' second match of the day, subtle errors by HSU allowed Western Oregon to claim a hard-fought 20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 battle. The Wolves rode the arms of Stacey Bennett and Kayla Mainer, who finished with 18 and 14 kills, respectively.

HSU was paced by Danielle Wells' 12 kills and four blocks. Lynsey Adams, with 223 digs, and Dani Nelson, with 22, led the defense.

The day's action also marked the return of HSU head coach Sue Woodstra, who has been on leave for the past year and a half while serving as first assistant coach with the USA Olympic volleyball team. Woodstra liked what she saw in her Jacks' squad as she gets to know them better.

"We have a lot of potential," Woodstra said. "We just need a little more team chemistry."

Tournament action continues Saturday with matches at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Lumberjacks will face Academy of Art in the later game to conclude the event.
